Abstract

Considered the only infectious disease with a lethality rate of almost 100%, rabies is caused by the Rabies virus of the Lyssavirus genus and Rhabdoviridae family, with the hematophagous bat of the Desmodus rotundus species as its main reservoir. This pathology has a zoonotic nature, being a progressive, acute and fatal neurological infection for mammals. Transmitted mainly through bites with a variable incubation time, early diagnosis is essential, starting treatment immediately so that the individual has a chance of surviving without miscellaneous damage. Analyzing this information and the fact that it is endemic in several countries despite the various tools used for control, it can be said that this disease is a great challenge in One Health connecting humans, animals and the environment. This work aims to conduct a bibliographic review on human rabies, presenting history, etiology, pathogenesis, means of transmission, diagnosis, treatment, control and casuistry.
