BETWEEN BODY, CULTURE, AND SILENCE: THE MEDIATION OF MENARCH IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SUBJECTIVITY AND FEMALE MENTAL HEALTH

This article investigates how the experience of menarche and its cultural mediation influence the construction of female subjectivity and aspects related to mental health from adolescence to adulthood. It is based on the hypothesis that the ways in which menarche is narrated, silenced, or symbolized within family, school, and social contexts impact a woman’s relationship with her own body and her identity. The theoretical framework is grounded in the historical-cultural perspective, articulating contributions from Audre Lorde (2019), Henri Wallon (1968), Laura Owen (1994), Lev Vygotsky (1991), Michel Foucault (1988), Silvia Lane (2012) e Zygmunt Bauman (2001). This is a qualitative study of a bibliographic nature, with an empirical component. The theoretical stage seeks to understand menarche as a biopsychosocial phenomenon, while the empirical stage involves conducting conversation circles with family triads composed of mother, father (or father figure), and daughter, based on guiding questions that foster the elicitation of narratives and experiences. Data will be analyzed through Reflexive Thematic Analysis, considering narrative content, relational dynamics, and sociocultural influences. The study engages with Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 5 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, addressing the promotion of mental health and gender equality. It is expected to contribute to understanding the experience of menarche in light of the intersections between gender, culture, and social conditions, expanding discussions on the body and female subjectivity, as well as informing practices of family, school, and healthcare mediation.
