POTENTIALLY INAPPROPRIATE USE OF PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS IN ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS IN LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES AND THE ROLE OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN MANAGEMENT AND DEPRESCRIBING

The aging of the Brazilian population establishes a scenario that demands systematic attention to the use of psychotropic medications in Long-Term Care Institutions for the Elderly (ILPIs). This study analyzes the potentially inappropriate use of psychotropics in institutionalized elderly people and the role of the mental health professional in pharmacological management and deprescribing. The research adopts a qualitative approach of bibliographic nature, with an integrative review of scientific productions indexed in SciELO and CAPES Journals databases, published between 2020 and 2025. The results indicate that polypharmacy, the absence of systematized protocols, and the lack of structured multidisciplinary teams expand the risks of inappropriate prescribing. The reviewed literature demonstrates that non-pharmacological interventions, the use of tools such as the Beers Criteria and STOPP/START, and coordinated interdisciplinary practice represent concrete paths for the safe reduction of psychotropic use. It is concluded that guided deprescribing, combined with continuing education of mental health professionals, constitutes an effective strategy for promoting medication safety and quality of life for institutionalized elderly people. The study contributes to the consolidation of practices aligned with the principles of rational drug use and comprehensive elderly care, reinforcing the need for institutional policies that support systematic pharmacological review processes in long-term care settings.
