Abstract

Introduction: The exposome, a concept introduced by Wild in 2005, encompasses the totality of exogenous and internal factors that a person experiences throughout their life and that influence their health or disease. Objective: Analyze what the exposome is and its importance in public health. Methods: A systematic documentary review was conducted using the PRISMA methodology in academic sources and artificial intelligence tools. It identifies its classification into general external, specific external, and internal domains; and describes measurement methods using biomarkers. Results: The importance of integrating multidisciplinary approaches and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence for the identification, characterization, and quantification of exposures is highlighted, in order to design more personalized preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies. Conclusion: The importance of early detection at different stages of life is recognized, taking into account the technical and methodological challenges of measuring complex exposures. Therefore, it is necessary to generate and develop open databases that strengthen public health.
