Abstract

The vanilla value chain exhibits high economic valorization but remains marked by structural vulnerabilities that constrain its contribution to regional development. This study analyzes, from a territorial and systemic perspective, the main bottlenecks and emerging opportunities within the global vanilla chain, with emphasis on family farming and the socio-environmental specificities of the Brazilian Cerrado. Methodologically, a systematic literature review is conducted according to the PRISMA protocol, combined with content analysis and theoretical triangulation among Geography, Rural Economics, and Sustainability. The results reveal power asymmetries, dependence on intermediaries, institutional fragility, low productive diversification, and socio-environmental risks that constitute an interdependent system of vulnerabilities. At the same time, territorial strategies capable of breaking these cycles are identified, such as diversification through agroforestry systems, cooperative strengthening, socio-environmental certifications, context-specific technological innovation, and integrated public policies. These strategies point toward the construction of territorialized production models that are more equitable and environmentally responsible. The study concludes that understanding territorial conditions is essential for reconfiguring the vanilla chain as a driver of sustainable regional development, particularly in territories with high sociobiodiversity, such as the Cerrado. It also contributes to filling a gap in the literature by articulating governance, territory, and sustainability in the analysis of a global agri-food chain still underexplored within the Brazilian geographical context.
