Abstract

Understanding dynamics and dietary plasticity during the early stages of a fish's life is crucial for understanding its ecology and enabling the development of effective rearing protocols, essential for restocking programs. This study investigated the feeding habits of piracanjuba (Brycon orbignyanus) larvae during the first 32 days of life under semi-intensive farming conditions. Through analysis of stomach contents from samples collected at regular intervals, an ontogenetic shift in diet was identified: initially carnivorous (up to the fourth day, feeding exclusively on curimba (Prochilodus lineatus) larvae to mitigate cannibalism), evolving to a diet predominantly composed of crustaceans and aquatic insects, with a constant presence of formulated feed from the seventh day onward, suggesting generalist and opportunistic behavior. The mean intestinal index of 1.08, calculated for 32-day-old juveniles, indicated an omnivorous habit with a strong carnivorous tendency, corroborating the trophic plasticity of the species. It is concluded that the management strategy combining fertilization (for live food production) and supplemental feeding is effective in meeting nutritional needs, reducing cannibalism, and optimizing juvenile production, and is crucial for larviculture and restocking programs for this species.
