THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CRIME IN MANAUS IN THE CONTEXT OF COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant changes in social and institutional dynamics, also affecting public safety and the environment. In Manaus, the combination of social isolation, declining state control, and economic vulnerability has led to an increase in harmful environmental practices. Considering this context, this study sought to investigate the spatial distribution of environmental crimes in Manaus during the pre-pandemic (2019/2020) and pandemic (2020/2021) periods, in order to understand how the health crisis affected the frequency and location of these crimes against nature. The research used a quantitative approach that, based on 1,551 police reports from the Civil Police of the State of Amazonas (SISP), employed statistical and geographic analysis techniques (ArcGIS 10.8, Global and Local Moran indices, MQO, SAR, and SEM equations). The results showed a 27.75% increase in environmental crimes during the first year of the pandemic, most of which were incidents against fauna and flora, and a spatial distribution of incidents in peripheral and vulnerable areas, such as Redenção, Educandos, and Novo Aleixo.From a scientific point of view, the research combines green criminology and spatial analysis in the Amazon region, contributing to the understanding of the connections between the pandemic and socio-spatial inequality, as well as environmental crimes. The conclusions have concrete significance for public safety and environmental enforcement.
